What is BitByBit made from?

BitByBit is made from PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate), a material produced by microorganisms through natural fermentation.


It performs like plastic during use, but behaves fundamentally differently after. Instead of becoming permanent microplastic pollution, it can be broken down by microorganisms in natural environments. Even in your body!

What exactly is PHA?

PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) is a biopolymer made by microorganisms through natural fermentation, using sugars or plant-based oils.


Unlike conventional plastics, PHA is designed to work with nature instead of against it. It behaves like plastic during use, but after its life, it can be broken down by microorganisms in environments like soil, compost, and even the body.


In simple terms: it’s plastic, reimagined.

Who is your material partner?

We work closely with Helian Polymers.


They are a specialist in PHA-based materials and play a key role in developing the material behind BitByBit.

Which certifications does our PHA material have?

Our PHA grade has been tested by Normec OWS and certified by TÜV Austria for OK Compost Home, OK Compost Soil, and OK Compost Marine.


It was also tested under ISO 17556 and ISO 14855-1, confirming that the material is biodegradable in natural environments such as soil, compost, and marine conditions.

How is PHA made?

PHA is made through a natural fermentation process.


Microorganisms are fed sugars or plant-based oils. As they grow, they produce PHA inside their cells as a form of energy storage. The material is then extracted and processed into a usable polymer.


No fossil resources. No synthetic shortcuts. Just a material grown by nature. Watch how it works


What happens if small particles end up in my food or body?

Unlike conventional plastic, PHA is designed to be processed by natural systems.


If small particles are ingested, they don’t accumulate as microplastics. Instead, they are broken down by the body and ultimately converted into CO₂ and water.

Is it dishwasher-safe?

Yes.


PHA only breaks down when microorganisms have time to grow and stay active, like in soil, compost, or the body. A dishwasher is too hot, too fast, and too chemically active for that process to happen.


So the board stays stable, even with daily washing.

Will it dull my knives?

No.


PHA is slightly softer than traditional plastic, making it gentler on your knives and helping them stay sharp longer.

Does it absorb odors or stains?

No.


The surface is non-porous, so it doesn’t absorb moisture, odors, or food residue.

Can I use it for meat and vegetables on the same board?

Yes, but we recommend using separate boards for different ingredients, just like with any cutting board.

That’s exactly why BitByBit comes in four colors. You can assign different colors to meat, fish, vegetables, or anything else that fits your kitchen routine.

Is it heat-resistant?

Yes.

BitByBit handles warm temperatures well and is heat-resistant under normal kitchen use, including hot rinsing and dishwasher cycles. Just avoid placing boiling pots or pans directly on the board.

Why are microplastics a problem?

Microplastics don’t disappear.


They are released from everyday plastic products, including cutting boards, and can end up in your food, your body, and the environment. Once there, they accumulate. That’s the problem.

Will the BitByBit board leave microplastics behind?

No.

BitByBit is made from PHA, a material that behaves fundamentally differently from conventional plastic. If small particles are released during use, they do not persist as microplastics in the body or in nature.

Where is BitByBit made?

BitByBit cutting boards are produced in the Netherlands by Wicro Plastics in Kessel.


By producing locally, we keep our supply chain short and stay closely involved in quality and production.

Does it contain BPA or toxins?

No.

BitByBit is 100% made from PHA, a material that does not contain BPA or other harmful additives commonly found in conventional plastics.

How sustainable is the packaging?

Our packaging is made in the Netherlands and contains no plastic.


Even the printing is designed differently: we use an ecological water-based ink instead of conventional plastic-heavy alternatives. Every detail matters.
